Seattle Raised Its Minimum Wage, Now This Is Happening

by Meghan Raffa.    As of April 1, the minimum wage in Seattle rose to $15. Small businesses have seven years to implement this change, while large companies must raise wages within the next two years. On one hand, it seems like a good thing that the government is mandating that low-income workers make enough money to help them meet  ... MORE

Rick Moran: 175,000 Pages Of Federal Regulations

What "unfettered capitalism?"        Whenever a liberal like Paul Krugman talks about the American system of “unfettered capitalism” I break out laughing. There are currently about 175,000 pages of federal regulations governing anything and everything about American business. In truth, many regulations have become necessary over the      ... MORE

Free Coffee To Cops Policy Burns Starbucks

No good deed goes unpunished.   A Raleigh police officer who was given a free cup of coffee by Starbucks is now suing the company after he spilled it and got burned. In the lawsuit, Matthew Kohr, a lieutenant with RPD, said the lid popped off the cup of coffee he ordered at the Starbucks on Peace Street in January 2012 and the cup collapsed.      ... MORE

American Families Are Being Economically Destroyed

by Michael Snyder.     The systematic destruction of the American way of life is happening all around us, and yet most people have no idea what is happening.  Once upon a time in America, if you were responsible and hard working you could get a good paying job that could support a middle class lifestyle for an entire family even if you only had a high    ... John Stossel: A Right To Discriminate

Bake me a cake, or go to jail!   Sadly, that is the new message from "inclusive" America. If you don't want to cater, photograph, preside over, sell pizza at, sell flowers to or otherwise participate in a gay wedding, you will be punished. If you don't want your business to pay for a kind of birth control that you consider murder, you will pay fines until your  ... MORE

by J.D. Tuccille.    Lousy news for the economy. "Complying with the health care law is costing small businesses thousands of dollars that they didn't have to spend before the new regulations went into effect," reports AP business writer Joyce M. Rosenberg. This should be a surprise to exactly nobody. In general, government mandates have poor track      ... MORE

Luke Hilgemann: More Regulations Equals Less Business

Going into business gets tougher and tougher. The health of the American economy can easily be measured by the health of American businesses — especially the rate at which people like you and me start new ones. This simple metric shows whether the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship is alive in well in our country. It has been for   ... MORE

Pedro Gonzales: How To Teach Kids About Socialism

Reality therapy for the young.  It used to be that if you wanted to teach kids about capitalism, you’d tell them to open a lemonade stand. By producing a product, marketing it, and selling it, they would get a small taste of what it is like to run a business. But now telling your kids to open a lemonade stand is the best way of teaching them about      ... MORE

Washington State Growers Struggle To Sell Legal Marijuana

High taxes are driving many to black market. Washington's legal marijuana market opened last summer to a dearth of weed. Some stores periodically closed because they didn't have pot to sell. Prices were through the roof. Six months later, the equation has flipped, bringing serious growing pains to the new industry. A big harvest of   ... MORE

Measure To Tax Internet Sales Is Dead For A Year

by Sean Higgins.    Legislation to tax Internet sales is dead for the year, a key Senate aide said. No bill allowing the taxation will be taken up before Congress' lame-duck session ends, meaning that purchases made through online merchants such as Amazon will continue to be tax-free for the foreseeable future. A coalition made up of state and      ... MORE

A. Barton Hinkle: End State Monopolies On Liquor Sales

It's time to get the state out of the booze business.    Virginia made a big mistake four years ago when it failed to end the state’s monopoly on liquor sales, and its residents are going to pay the price for that — again. So far in 2014 Virginia has hauled in 6 percent more revenue than it had by this point last year. But lawmakers had planned     ... MORE
